Back to School Nut Free Trail Mix Ideas

There's something a little bit special about National Trail Mix Day this year because after months (and months!) of lockdown and school closures for many of us this week will see our little Handfuls heading back through the school gates once more.

So I thought what better way to cover both topics with a little blog post full of some nut-free, school friendly, trail mixes for the new term.  That's right campers - it's time to get those lunch boxes and water bottles back out & ready for the return to school.

As a healthier snacks company we use lots of nuts to power our mixes but we appreciate this can be a minefield with schools invariably adopting 'no nut' policies - for very good reason of course.  So as part of National Trail Mix Day the boys and I have put together some nut-free trail mix options, we have substituted the nuts for seeds and corn which taste brill and make a good adult snack too.

Our plan is for the kids to make two options at the beginning of the week which we will put in kilner jars, then they can be popped in bags and we will alternate each day.

We started with three ingredients but the boys invariably ended up with 4 or 5 in their pot.

Base Ingredients

  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Salted Crunchy Corn (if you've not bought this on it's own before we recommend our friends @lovecorn).

Additions

  • Dried Mango Chopped
  • Dried Apricots Chopped
  • Jumbo Raisins
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Multigrain Cereal Hoops
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Popcorn
  • Coconut Flakes

The boys favourite combinations (we let them name them themselves).

Fruit Pop

  • Pumpkin Seeds, Cranberries, Apricot and Popcorn

Sweet & Salty

  • Salted Crunchy Corn, Cranberries, Raisins and Mini Marshmallows

Brek-Fruit

  • Sunflower Seeds, Raisins, Multigrain Cereal and Cranberries
Tropical Crunch
  • Pumpkin Seeds, Popcorn, Mango and Coconut Flakes

Hopefully there's a bit of inspiration in there for you. I definitely found that the boys took a lot more interest in the snacks having had the chance to pick the ingredients themselves and there have been less requests for crisps and chocolate bars since!

But of course one of the things we love the most about Trail Mix is that the possibilities are endless.  So we'd love to hear from you about what mixes your family love.
